An Early Trip Across Texas, Champ D’Isle and an Early Overland Trip from Jean Lafitte’s Pirate Island of Galveston to Nacogdoches and Beyond in 1818 by H. Gordon Pettey, Ph.D. - This is the true autobiography of a Frenchman by the name of Just Girrod who, along with others, had been forced by the Spanish to abandon their illegal fort, Champ d’Isle, that they had built on the Trinity River in the vicinity of present Liberty, Texas. They retreated to Galveston in hopes of boarding the ships of the French pirate Jean Lafitte, to New Orleans. However, not enough ships were available for all, at this pirate controlled island, so the only option for Girrod's group was to travel overland, north through Spanish Nacogdoches to get high enough inland to cross the swollen rivers between them and French Natchitoches. It is very descriptive of Nacogdoches at this time and tells of his being captured by Comanche Indians on the Comanche trail north of there. This true tale is told in his own words. Every exciting page is well worth the read. Regular book size. One of a kind with illustrations and original map.
