The Cordova Rebellion by H. Gordon Pettey, Ph.D. - Vincenti Cordova of Nacogdoches fomented one of the most harebrained episodes in Texas History. Originally from the Spanish Capital of Los Adaes, he was from an old-line Spanish family who had immigrated to Nacogdoches after the entire infrastructure in East Texas was closed by the King. Cordova was a political leader at Nacogdoches and had accumulated much wealth. But two years after Texas became a Republic, he violently turned against this new Anglo government and with help from many local Hispanics (both old-line Spanish and Mexicans), plus the government of Mexico and the Cherokee Indians, he attempted to return Texas back to Mexico two years after the Republic had been formed. The backwoods sharpshooters quickly formed a sizable army and just as quickly evicted him and his volunteers. These were given amnesty but Cordova could never return. His insurrection also spelled the eventual demise of almost all Indians in Texas.
